Thomas Edison’s Inventions

Thomas Edison, who came to be known as the Wizard of Menlo Park, was one of the most prolific inventors of the 1800s. During his lifetime, he patented over a thousand inventions—including the light bulb, the automatic telegraph, and the phonograph (record player). Edison first became interested in what electricity could do when he worked as a telegraph operator for Western Union.

Edison believed that if he gathered enough talented minds in a laboratory, they could produce inventions on a regular basis.10 He put this idea into action in 1876 when he set up his first laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, with the goal of producing a new invention every ten days. This lab, located about twenty-five miles from New York City, was the world’s first industrial research laboratory.

In addition to all of his inventions, Edison wanted to set up a system that could deliver electrical power to business, home, and government users. So he went to work to develop a method of generating large amounts of electricity and sending it over wires to users throughout the city.
